Colorado statutes and directives require CFIs to have specific training in domestic violence, coercive control, child abuse, and child sexual abuse. The law sets minimum hours for initial training and ongoing training every five years. Courts appoint CFIs from an eligibility roster only if the person meets these competency standards. The Judicial Branch provides forms that reference these requirements in appointment orders. The focus of the CFI’s work is always the child’s best interests and safety. Asking about a CFI’s training is appropriate before stipulating to an appointment.
