Colorado law provides that the obligation to pay future maintenance ends upon the death of either party. It also ends when the maintenance term expires if no timely modification motion is filed. The law further states that maintenance terminates on the remarriage or establishment of a civil union by the person receiving maintenance unless the decree says otherwise. Parties can agree in writing to different terms. Courts can always order termination if warranted. Check your decree to see if it alters the default termination rules.
