For orders entered on or after July 1, 1997, support ends automatically when the last child turns 19 unless an exception applies. Support can continue if the child is still in high school or an equivalent program, typically through the end of the month after graduation. It may continue if the child is mentally or physically disabled, as ordered by the court. Marriage or active military service can trigger emancipation sooner. Parents can also agree in writing to extend support or contribute to certain postsecondary expenses. These rules are set out in the child support statute’s emancipation and postsecondary provisions.
